Making Memories - One Dream at a Time
We are SO excited to start this fun and exciting adventure. Our little farm is in Tennessee surrounded by the foothills of the Tennessee Valley and lots of wildlife! From deer to turkey to bobcats, you never know who is going to stroll across the lane. We are starting small, offering fresh maple syrup next winter and fresh eggs once our flock matures. For now, we will document our journey and hope you enjoy the fun along the way!
In some ways, our journey has been unplanned. While we always wanted a place to raise our boys and call our forever home, we didn't start out with a hobby farm in mind. Sort of on a whim one day, we decided to contact a realtor about looking for land. While looking at our current property, we discussed our home and the potential value. We were surprised at how fast it might sell and decided to take a leap of faith. Selling our home would allow us to purchase the land. Something we had frequently discussed, looking for years just "across the line" in Tennessee. We have lived our lives on the open door policy- the Lord opens a door, and we walk through it.
After selling, renting, and purchasing the land, we naively thought we'd build and move in a year! After four years, we finally finished our home and moved. It's been almost two years now. In that time, we began exploring our property a little more closely. An acquaintance shared the experience her family had tapping black walnut trees, so we thought we'd look around and see what we had. Realizing we had plenty of maple trees, we started exploring the idea of syrup. Our maiden batch was better than we ever imagined, and we've had so many ask if we are going to sell it. We plan to offer syrup this next winter and early 2026. More to come on that for sure!!
We named our farm after a little blue bird that lives around here. Never had we seen a bird so blue until we purchased our land. Admittedly, we became birdwatchers when searching for a site to build our home. Every visit we would watch for the bright blue and yellow birds that lived in the field to greet us as we drove up. There were so many different birds that we had never seen. Eventually, we learned the name of our little blue neighbor, the Indigo Bunting. And so goes the name of our farm! Some of our favorite times are sitting on our deck listening to the many birds that live around us. Maybe that's why chickens are so fitting as one of our next ventures. We've had chickens before, but it's been a while. So... we started small...with ONLY 55. Everyone laughs when we say that, but why get 10 when you can have 55. Maybe it's like getting a tattoo- once you get one, you can't stop! With the price of eggs and plenty of space, it just made sense. We definitely won't have any chicken houses in the future, but we will have a fun bunch of beauties to manage and eggs to sell locally in the fall of 2025.
Stay tuned for updates, share our page, and expect a few chicken jokes here and there!
