No really, taking a minute to check on the gals sets my mind at ease. Plus, it gets me up and out for a little walk. Did you know that chickens are highly intelligent and social animals? When we go check on them, they run to the door and let us hold them. The more you hold them as youngsters, the easier it is to manage them as they get older. If they know you, they let you work with them. Chicken health is so much easier to manage if they aren't stressed, and you don't have to chase them. It really depends on the breed, but according to the Almanac, a healthy, young hen lay on average about 250 eggs per year. At that rate, we're going to need a a store front. 🏪 More reason for you to share our page and place your order!
My Granny Cobb use to say that chickens are happier when a rooster is around. Then she'd giggle. She had a fun sense of humor.
Roosters keep the ladies in line, making sure that cliques among the chicks don't create a scuffle. There is usually a pecking order, not shocking really. 😏 Roosters also protect the flock from predictors such as hawks. JD and friends may fight each other, but they also fight to save lives. You need more than one to keep them from getting too aggressive. Approximately one rooster per ten hens keeps things in order. We're still waiting to see if any other "henry's" are in our flock, but we suspect that there are a few yet to show their colors.
One might ask WHAT IN THE WORLD we were thinking when we decided to do this. Recently, we've decided that we like to bite off more than we can chew. At the spontaneous moment we bought them, it seemed to fit our motto! 🐣
